His hands were shaking as she closed the screen of his laptop. He couldn’t hear them, not really, but there were screams.

There were screams everywhere.

My god,” he whispered, clutching his wife’s hand for strength. “What have I done?”

Hello, friends, Blake here. This isn’t a mistake, there isn’t anything this missing. Today’s scene from the world of The Curtain really is that short. This segment ends our “prologue” section, where we’ve taken a glimpse all over this world at just a few of the different monsters you’ll encounter in the coming months. And you may see some of the surviving humans turn up again, too. But as the story really BEGINS tomorrow, there will be a shift as well. Each of these stories took place on the night the Curtain opened. Tomorrow, we’re going ahead in the timeline five years, to a point where the world has pretty much established itself as what I want it to be — a place full of monsters, where some people try to deny their existence and others try to fight for their lives. I decided to jump forward because if I kept going forward a day at a time, the next several storylines (by necessity) would be of the “people running around not believing they’re being killed by a vampire” variety. It’s been done. I’m more interested in what the world becomes AFTER the monsters have been around for a while.

I’ve got a little added treat for you as well. As you probably already know, I host my own audio fiction podcast, the Evercast (subscribe on iTunes!) where I am currently serializing my novel Other People’s Heroes. But today, I’ve put up a little bonus episode — the audio of the prologue scenes to The Curtain. If you want to hear my melodious tones reading what you’ve read so far, it’s right here.

Tales of the Curtain (Evercast #36)

Happy Halloween!
